Can amoxicillin be used to treat an infection in the mouth? I was just wondering if amoxicillin would be effective in treating an infection in my mouth, most likely caused from my wisdom teeth? I know they have prescribed me antibiotics in the past, and I thought it was amoxicillin, but I might be wrong. I am just wondering if it is commonly used for such ailments. Thanks.

caffsans replied: "yes it can as long as it isn't outdated"

pm replied: "Yes, anything with "cillin" is usually for infections. The best thing that you should do is go to your doctors so they can prescribe something for you. When it's antibacterial medication usually the doctors prescribe you the med and you need to take it for a particular time. If you use it and then stop before the doctors insturction then your body or the bacteris is going to be amune to the antibiotics and you would have to take something stronger."

pandora078 replied: "amoxicillin is actually the prferred antibiotic for mouth related ailments."

jamrdh70 replied: "Yes, I wrote out a prescription for my dentist to sign to give my last patient today. Not only is it used for infections (in her case a nasty face swelling abcess) but it is used to premedicate patients with heart ailments or joint replacements prior to dental cleanings. As noted by another poster, if you get a prescription take the full dose to clear the infection. If it is an abcess you have then you will need to take the antibiotics and then most likely need a root canal or extraction of your tooth. Good luck JAMRDH - a dental hygienist"

Can Amoxicillin be used with Cyklokapron and Mefenamic Acid? My Doctor's given me Amoxicillin for a chest infection I've had recently, and I have to take Mefenamic Acid and Cyklokapron at monthly intervals. I didn't have chance to ask her whether I could use them together, as I was unaware that I'd have to use them together until today, could there be side-effects or can they be used safely in conjunction?

Juliet replied: "I checked with a site used by pharmacists to determine if there is a drug interaction between any of those medications. As far as I can tell, you shouldn't have a problem. Just to play it safe, check with the pharmacist anyway. Pharmacists know way more about drugs than doctors...after all, that's what they go to school for!"

could the antibiotic amoxicillin be used to treat bronchitis? i know bronchitis is contagious so could the amoxicillin help with that, so it wouldn't be as contagious anymore?

Can you chew/ground up amoxicillin pills used to cure strep throat? I have a lot of trouble swallowing pills, and these pills are huge! So you can cut them in half? Even though it tastes bad, you can?

smiller2151 replied: "If they are regular amoxicillin pills yes. If it's some type of extended release, then no. Try cutting them in half instead."

Felicia S replied: "you should never crush or break prescription meds because they could be controlled relese and if you break that barror you will get all of the dose at once and could overdose."

Brian A replied: "Usually they are just capsules that you can pull apart and there is powder inside. It tastes like a$$, but if you mix it up with some apple sauce or something it might not be that bad. Many antibiotics are available in liquid form, which you may want to ask about next time."

Can Augmentin or Amoxicillin be used to treat Trichomoniasis? I have strep throat and Trich and they just prescribed me the one antibiotic...will that knock it all out of my system?

Nicolette replied: "I dont know about the strep but the I've had tric and if they gave u really nasty pills then that will take care of the trich. but amoxicillin and augmentin wont work for that cause its a diff kind of infection."

Can human amoxicillin be used for dogs? If not, what human antibiotic is safe to be used for a dog that has a bite infection from a fight with a raccoon?

rescue member replied: "No - dogs require their own kind of antibiotics - take your dog to the vet to have this bite looked at. He will likely need a tetanus shot too. When my dog was bitten by a snake, he got a tetanus shot and antibiotics. Please don't wait - take him now, that the bite is already infected is not a good sign."

JenVT replied: "Call the vet and ask or better yet bring the dog in. An injection of antibiotics is the quickest way to ward off infection. I assume your dog has had a rabies vaccine recently?"

Brie replied: "The problem with human drugs is they are made for HUMANS IN HUMAN DOSAGES. You don't know what dosage would be correct for a dog or even if you have the right antibiotic. Just take your dog to the vet. It won't be that expensive."

ainawgsd replied: "The antibiotic that you VET prescribes! Human amoxicillin and amoxicillin used for animals is the exact same drug. However, the dosage used for different species is very different and the dose that you have on hand is unlikely to be the correct dose for your dog. Over-dosing your dog can be very dangerous and under-dosing your dog will not only do nothing for the infection but it will also contribute to drug-resistance, meaning your dog will require stronger, more expensive antibiotics to actually resolve the infection. I work for a vet and on the few occasions when clients have used a human medication to try to treat their pets at home their pet has ended up hospitalized because they used the wrong medication or the wrong dose. Why do you have access to human antibiotics anyway? If they were prescribed for you or a family member you should have used all of them during the course of treatment."

bybers are the best breeders :) replied: "yes my dogs get the liquid amoxicillin thats given to children but vet needs to weigh your dog to get the right dosage."

K B replied: "Honestly - you need to get your dog to the vet. Raccoons have bacteria in their mouth that can cause a lot more than a simple infection. Rabies quickly comes to mind. Dogs can take amoxicillian - but the dosage is not the same as a human and you can easily over dose your dog. Going into the vet office and making sure your dog really is ok - is more valuable than the wait and see game. Take the amoxicillain with you that you have and if your vet recommends using this drug, perhaps your vet can tell you how much or if it is even the right way to go right now."

Sweetie replied: "It's not safe for dogs to use almost any human medicine!"

DeeDawg replied: "bite infections must be treated by a vet. the wound may need to be irrigated. bring the dog to the vet, and if they prescribe amox, you can discuss it with them. they would need to divide the pills for you, if you were to use them, because the dosage would be much too high."

BYB's kill puppies! replied: "all antibiotics are PRESCRIPTION ONLY You need antibiotics from a vet. You shouldnt even have any "human antibiotics" unless they were prescribed to you.. in which case, you should not have any "leftover" drugs.. antibiotics are meant to be taken as the FULL COURSE.. you're not suppossed to take them until you feel better and then save the rest for later."

Can you used Amoxicillin with Accutane? I'm on Accutane right now and i was wandering if i can you amoxicillin with it, and if i do use amoxicillin with it cancel out the accutane?

Chanhassen replied: "No, there are no drug interactions there. Take each medicine as directed on the label"

solomae replied: "don't ever mix anything unless you speak with your doc also be very careful with accutane it can be toxic to your liver and your doc should be monitoring that"

Meg replied: "When you go to the doctor, always let him/her know about any prescription medication you are taking. Accutane is a pretty hard core drug that can affect your liver and cholesterol levels, brain swelling, the whole deal. It's important to make sure your doc knows so that s/he can choose the right medication for you. More likely than not, you should be able to take Amoxicillin with Accutane, but I would let your doc make that judgment call... Good luck! :]"
