How long should it take migraine medicine to help? I have been diagnosed with cluster migraines. They did respond well to Imitrex for a while but I have had one for the past 3 weeks that keeps coming back. My doctor prescribed Medrol dosepack. I am into my second day out of six of this medicine and so far have no improvement in my headache. How long should it take for me to see any benefit from this? Thank you for your help.

Billie77 replied: "Medrol, a corticosteroid drug, is used to reduce inflammation and improve symptoms in a variety of disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, acute gouty arthritis, and severe cases of asthma. Medrol may be given to people to treat primary or secondary adrenal cortex insufficiency (inability of the adrenal gland to produce sufficient hormone). It is also given to help treat the following disorders: Severe allergic conditions (including drug-induced allergic states) Blood disorders (leukemia and various anemias) Certain cancers (along with other drugs) Skin diseases (including severe psoriasis) Connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus Digestive tract diseases such as ulcerative colitis High serum levels of calcium associated with cancer Fluid retention due to nephrotic syndrome (a condition in which damage to the kidney causes loss of protein in urine) Various eye diseases Lung diseases such as tuberculosis Worsening of multiple sclerosis As you can see it does not mention headache relief. You should call your doctor and go over this in detail. See if there is some other medication you could take for the migraines. I've enclosed a link that will give you more information on this medicine."

Snowhiker replied: "I really don't care for Medrol. This medicine is for inflammation of your blood vessels in your head. It should of started to work by now. I have taken this medicine and it never worked for me. I used to have as many as 3 headaches a day. 4-5 a week sometimes. I usually would end up at the doctor's office or the hospital. I was given Demerol 75 or 100 mg IM and Phenergan. The Imitrex never worked for me all it did was to raise my blood pressure. I would call my doctor back if not any better. If the doctor would have the headache he would want someone to give him something to stop the pain. Good Luck"

Will all migrane medicines such as Imitrex cause problems? I'm currently using Imitrex for my migranes and for the most part, it works. However, I experience side effects that include tightening of the chest and throat and shortness of breath. Because of these, I don't want to continue using Imitrex, but I'm afraid I'll have to put up with my migranes for days because over the counter drugs don't work. Are there any other migrane prescriptions similar to Imitrex that don't have the side effects that I'm experiencing?

Patti C replied: "There are many, many migraine medications available now. Some work similar to Imitrex and some work by preventing the migraine (most of these you take daily whether you have a headache or not). Please go back to the doctor and ask for a different medication. If your doctor is up on the medications, he/she may have a good suggestion for you since the Imitrex works so well."

pitsargenaf replied: "ABSOLUTELY! Get off that crap, NOW! I know personally, first-hand what it's like to suffer with that crap, and so does my mother. Take calcium and magnesium pills. Your body is craving these essential vitamins and minerals! A B-complex helps tremendously (over time) too. And head on is great! ~N"

Carpanone Kid replied: "All medicines (ie. drugs) are foreign chemicals to the body. This means that your body was not designed to ingest them. All have side effects. One needs to pay attention to these and understand that there are risks. Here is something simple that you can try yourself. Many migrane sufferers actually have a dehydration issue. If you simply drink 17 ounces of water (pure clean preferred, not chlorinated, etc) within 10 minutes, relief can be accomplished. People are surprised because it' so simple. But not all have found relief."

What medicine can I take that will prevent migraines? I am on Effexor XR now and it no longer works. ? I take Effexor XR to prevent migraines and take Imitrex to get rd of one when I get a migraine. The Effexor is no longer working and I was wondering what else I could take to prevent the migraines. Thanks

eliz... replied: "As far as Rx's go, Topamax can be used for migrane prevention. Topamax is an anti-convulsant (used for epilepsy and seizures), but has several "off-the-label" uses, including migranes prevention. good luck!"

docblinker replied: "Seriously, have you looked into chiropractic. Migraine headaches are complicated but can sometimes be the result of the a shifted vertebrae high in your neck (C1 aka. atlas). Part of the brain stem travels through this vertebrae, and many occipital muscles connect there as well. When this vertebrae is out of place, it can irritate nerves, as well pull those muscles causing a headache. Like I said, Migraines have many different reasons, but trying a chiropractor is a cheap investment to find out if he can fix them ALL TOGETHER...as compared to the alternative of being on drugs for the rest of your life. Chiropractic is not smoke and mirrors anymore. There is science behind if you look. Plus the risks and side effects are nothing than that of the drugs on the market today. Whatever you decide, I hope you find relief. Migraines are horrible."

Shay replied: "My sis-n-law takes topomax (sp) she said it really works"

What is the best migraine headache medicine? fioricet? or Imitrex?

Doug replied: "Actually the best one is the one you find to take your migraine away. Everyone is different...Imitrex is good. My wife uses Maxalt. Firoicet is old...prob. not the best choice. There are someother newer ones as well. Make sure you have a complete evaluation of your headaches before being prescribed migraine medicine. If your doctor doesn't order a Ct scan (at least)...go somewhere else."

holmesla327 replied: "Well, I don't think anyone can really trully answer that because everyone is different, and what might be the miracle drug for someone might not be for everyone. I have tried both and I had more luck with the fioricet than the Imitrex, but it made my mind a little cloudy. The Imitrex is the miracle drug for my mother. She can cut her one pill up into 7 little pieces and it will get rid of her migraine. (for insurance reasons she can only get 9 pills every 60 days, yet she suffers with migraines everyday) I personally take Relpax, which is a Triptan like Imitrex, and it helps 75% of the time. good luck!"

what is the best medicine for migraines? what is the best rx for migraines? ib profen used to always take away my headaches but not anymore. tonight I took a percocet my bro gave me and it took the pain away but made me really sick to my stomach. I dont want to take imitrex cuz of the heart problems I've heard complaints of. someone help these are getting horrible and I get them at least every other day lately. :(

M replied: "Fiorinal (barbituate pain killer) is the best thing for a migraine headache. I took them for years before going to the chiropractor. After that visit, I never had a headache again. Try it."

ben6969 replied: "The best medicine for migraines is to get ample rest, keep a clear mind. Pain-killers like panadol can only relieve the pain for a period of time."

Susan M replied: "zomig."

Jenna A replied: "Lavender. Buy yourself some shampoo that has the lavender smell in it. Or purchase some lavender oil and place on your pillows. Yes I'm serious when I say this. I have had several friends and family members who have had migraines to the point of having to take medication daily have them reduced at least 90% in pain, duration and frequency just by changing to Suave Lavender shampoo."

CLS replied: "Best OTC Medication I've used was Excedrin migraine. It really works fast and stops the pain."

Mark replied: "I had constant migraines but no longer use "rx". Those just cover the symptom without getting to the cause. That's the result of our pill-popping society. Migraines can be caused by undiagnosed food intolerances or heavy metal poisoning (I had both). Heavy metals don't show up on regular tests until they are provoked out of the body with a chelating agent. I wasted money on one blood test before finding another doctor who did a urine test properly."

RavenBlack replied: "How about Excedrin Migraine? It works for me..."

Susan M replied: "I have migraine most of the time for 25 years, since pregnancy. Fiorinal works best, then Amerge. As long as you don't have heart problems, the triptans will generally work. Amerge longer than most. Imitrex works for under an hour on my headache. I go to acupuncture; have tried three chiropractors, long term, no help; cranio-sacral helps some, too. I have taken so many drugs and tried diets, physical therapy, naturopaths, so many things . I still have my sticking headache. Lavender oil can help, applied to the back of the skull for me, but not a cure or anything. Acupuncture has been the most effective for me. Good luck in finding what helps you. I take melatonin at night. B-vitamins, ginger and magnesium other stuff. I always research and try things because hope is the most important thing for me next to a cure."

LiveLoveLaughDream replied: "Sweetie, gosh, I feel so bad for you...I am a 24/7 sufferer, and it took so long for me to get to the point where I wasn't suffering 24 hours a day. My dr., reg. dr. put me on Topopmax, which you have to gradually get your body used too, and it's an everyday medicine, so it dosen't stop the migraines...the imitrex, I was allergic too and had to immediately get off of, so the only thing that even remotely helped was narcotics, which I was taking about 16 a day, and still not killing the pain. By the time I got to see the neurologist, I had been on the narcotics, ibuprofin, for two months and topomax 100 mgs a month....but still having migraines.... and get this, all these years, I had been treated for sinus and it was migraines all the entire time. What I found out is that I was having what is called rebound headaches, and for some reason you can't take ibuprophin when you have migraines, and it really is true. My neuro, had it out with me the second time I went in and I didn't realize I thought it would be better to take the ibuprophin than a loratab or such for the pain when it wasn't bad enough for Maxalt which I take, even to today around twenty a month, and I'm up to 200 mg. of Topomax a day. But he told me under no circumstances can I take ibuprophin, and I stopped it and it did make a very big difference in my migraines. Alot less after the initial first week, also, stronge smells, smoke, bleach, but, i have no idea, why ibuprophin causes more migraines, but it does, so stay away from it.....I was taking it every day thinking it was so good for me, and helping me and it was, but it was really making it worse, and after they told me that, and I stopped it and got over the rebound headaches, you wouldn't believe the difference in the amount or the less headaches/migraines I had....good luck....it just takes time to find the righ meds and dr....I thought I was going to die there for months with them..or feel better banging my head against a wall with them, been through alot of pain, but nothing like migraines, you can't eat, sleep, your sick, nauseated, I lost so much weight noone new me in a matter of months, it' s horrible...and it's something I'm still dealing with, and I've found stress is a major factor with mine and you can't avoid stress all together being a single mom of two in college with no money, so I just try to deal, and manage, and thank God I have the maxalt to help in between...good luck"

Suzanne L replied: "Go to a good neurologist and they can tell you whats best for you, I had trouble too with Imitrex giving me a racing heart and it did not work. I tried just about everything for mine and my neurologist said there is a drug you can take everyday to them away but I get mine maybe once a week or once every 2 weeks, I am on a combination of Promethazine(for nausea) and Butal/apap/caf 50-325-40mg and what a great combination, they work awesome for me. Altho he did say if you take these too often they will make migraines reoccur so they may not be for you if you get them every other day, seek help from a Neurologist. p.s. I just read another response and it is true, stress is a huge factor in getting these. I also have chronic pain and when it is bad that's also a trigger for them, also some foods, so it could be various things, see the Dr.( a good one)"

i wanted to know can a headache not be present but after taking imitrex have one.? my doctor has said when i have the flashes of light that might be a migraine so to take the medicine as soon as you know a migraine is around the corner. I have noticed that after i take the imitrex my headache occur please i am desperate to know please answer.

essentiallysolo replied: "if you still get the headache after using the imitrex it would suggest you need something different, the imitrex isn't working. No, it won't cause a migraine, if you use it as the doctor directed and you still get a headache, then it simply isn't working."

imitrex...cause of worse headache?? has anybody experienced a worsened headache after taking imitrex or some other migraine medicine????????? why does this happen and what should i do???

my_mas0n replied: "me here says that more study needs to be done re comparisons vs. placebo."

mrcricket1932 replied: "Pretty soon you will want to deal with the factor which is causing the headache, rather than just trying to reduce the symptoms with meds."

What should I do with my husband's swelling and throbbing head? Over the counter headache medicine never works and we're all out of Imitrex.

Jack B replied: "If you stroke it, it will eventually go down. Just be prepared, some white stuff may come shooting out at you."

nite_angelica replied: "Have you tried massaging it?"

Chuck replied: "Try to massage it with your hands. A soft kiss never hurts either."

FInny Macgee replied: "Maybe kiss it better."

Srsly replied: "Stroke it gently with some lotion. Nothing relieves a tension headache like a nice head massage."

loveahlulbayt14 replied: "for the swelling i don't know, but if its throbbing why don't you just give him a head message and eliminate any loud noises around you guys"

Hella replied: "maybe you should have him see a Dr."

Justin Credible replied: "Wow, how unfunny."

Magic 8 Ball replied: "Give it a rub to ease the pressure."

savannagh1996 replied: "if it's a migraine then imitrex works for me - can your pharmacy call the doc who prescribed it and have it refilled? If money is an issue please know that imitrex does come in generic. Other than that - my suggestion would be go to the ER or a walk-in clinic if it's that bad. My migraines are so bad so that if I don't take Excederin Migraine at the start of a headache then it takes 2 imitrex to kill the ache. Hope this helps"

Allison, the Nice Lady replied: "DAMN this is fun."

sweetie pie replied: "Headaches can be dangerous, even deadly. Its not likely but you need to go to several doctors and get diff opinions. Get a catscan just to be safe. It could be numerous things, but for now just have him lay down and relax. Go do all the chores and try to get everything done so he has less to stress about."

Lelah replied: "usually when someone has a medical problem you go to the docter. if you cant afford one then go to a hospital and see if they will do anything"

Tanya T replied: "Surprisingly, cold pack or ice really helps. The pain is caused by swelling and it will go down with the cold application. I suffer from horrible migraines too--a dark, quiet, cool room and a cold pack can lead to a nap and a pain-free morning =). Good luck!"

Xtreme replied: "Get some eucalyptus lotion or cream and rub it on the sides of his head. This should alleviate the pressure."

tcc_00676 replied: "peace & quiet & a lot of ice."

Clay replied: "What ever it is your already doing will be just fine. The swelling and throbbing will go away over time! *IM IN THE PLAYPEN WITH MILDRED**"

weisenheimer replied: "It could be a snakebite. Suck the poison out quick."

Garnet Glitter replied: "Could be stuffed, y'know...give him a box of tissues and tell him one good blow should clear it right up."
