Does anyone know what I can do about losing weight after Zoloft? I have been on Zoloft now for 9 months and my life is awful. I have gained weight, have excessive sweating and I could sleep 24 hours a day. I am a professional and mother of 3. I have dropped my dose from 100mg to 50mg within the last week. I want to be off the drug all together but not sure if I can. Your comments and suggestions are appreciated.

lisa j replied: "First of all how old are you?I have been on Zoloft on and off for15 yrs., your symptoms do not match the side affects of this drug, it sounds more like early menopause"

Ast M replied: "do sports"

sweets replied: "Unfortuantly, weight gain is a common side effect for people on paxil, zoloft, and prozac. Thats good u went down to 50 mg, just slowly wean yourself off it , keep lowering the dose weekly, and then you may be able to take it everyother day, every 3 days, etc. til u can eventually quit them. Talk to your doctor though, he may put you on something else. I hear wellbutrin does good for weight loss. Good luck."

alspheres replied: "Tina, this is a poor forum for you to be seeking advice for such a critical health issue. I want to encourage you to make associations with regard to these issues that you can feel and develop some level of trust. I fear you end up lost with these anonymous and unprofessional responses. Be kind to yourself and seek reliable help. Does this make sense to you?"

Margie replied: "Hi, With these medications often the natural balance has tipped. I often see patients who start eating more, because they constantly feel hungry. The best way to lose the weight after medication is to adjust your eating patterns, exercise and limit alcohol intake. If this isn't helping, try seeing a dietitian for a few months to get you back on the right track. Unfortunately with all weight loss it won't happen overnight... Good luck"

How long does it take to lose weight after the drug Zoloft? My Dr. put me on Zoloft 50 mg after the birth of my daughter for anxiety. I was on the drug about 3 yrs., and gained 36 lbs. while on it! I was able to wean myself off of the drug, & have been off of it completely 2 months now. I FINALLY stopped gaining weight rapidly, and am less bloated. However, I can`t seem to get what weight is on me to budge. I was just curious.... how long does it take to lose the Zoloft weight once you`ve stopped? I exercise regularly & have normal eating habits... breakfast, lunch, dinner... not much snacking. I`m a 27 yr. old married female. I am 5`4. I was about 145 pds. before taking Zoloft. Thanks...

ms*pessimist replied: "Hi, I had that same problem with Zoloft myself! It's frustrating, too, isn't it? I've lost about 20 lbs over the last year... stopped taking Zoloft in January 2006--it literally took a year to lose the weight. But everyone's different, so it's hard to say. Just keep doing what you're doing, though, and the weight should come off! Good luck!"

Will Zoloft keep you from losing weight? I have been dieting for 3 weeks now and the first week I lost 3 pounds and the past two weeks I have lost nothing. I have stuck to my diet plan (Weight Watchers) and have been exercising regularly. This may be normal, but I couldn't help but wondering if the Zoloft was affecting my weight loss. Does anyone know?

Is losing weight a side effect of Zoloft? Not that I'm complaining, but I have lost 7 kilos in 3 months of being of Zoloft. Just wondering is this a side effect or is something else causing it?

Hanky replied: "I lost a bit of weight in the first few months of taking Zoloft then my body just went back to normal after a while."

No Longer Taking Zoloft -- How long before I start losing the weight I gained while on the drug? Hi, I weaned myself off of Zoloft and officially stopped taking it a few days ago. I gained about 15 pounds while on the medication. Any insight on how long it takes to lose the weight that I gained while on the drug? I eat healthily and work out about 3 days a week.

amg7613 replied: "It won't take long...I lost about 3-5 lbs a month when I got off Lexapro (that made me gain 25 lbs in 6 months---I ate all the time!)...it'll gradually come off (anti-depressants tend to completely stop your metabolism!). If you are having difficulty without an anti-depressant---ask about trying Wellbutrin (no weight gain!)"

Binge eating disorder and zoloft can you lose weight on zoloft? I have binge eating disorder its gotten completely out of hand and I have gained a lot of weight. My doctor perscribed me zoloft but I've been reading all over the place that people GAIN on zoloft I'm wondering if this is because they are eating more as they are less depressed or its something in the chemical makeup of the drug. I've also read a few places that it does help control binge eating so people can lose weight? What are your experiences?

Suzz replied: "I have been on Lustral (the UK name for Zoloft) and I have lost 18lb in 2 months. This is almost certainly because I comfort eat when I'm depressed. Since being on the tablets (which seem to reduce my appetite anyway) I have only felt like eating when I'm genuinely hungry, and am satisfied on smaller amounts. Bear in mind that some people lose their appetites when they are depressed, therefore, it stands to reason that antidepressants could increase their appetites. You will probably find (as I did) that you feel a bit rough at first - I felt like I had a hangover, even though I hadn't been drinking. However, the side effects only lasted about a week, and I now feel fantastic. I have so much more energy, and I have dropped two dress sizes. I'm not saying that Zoloft is for everyone, but compared to other antidepressants, this is the first one that has made me lose weight as opposed to putting it on. I have tried every diet going, and I've never found weight loss as easy as I'm finding it now. Good luck!"

How can I lose weight while taking Zoloft? I have been taking Zoloft (100mg) for almost 3 years and have gained over 20 pounds in that time. I finally feel "normal" and have been able to handle emotional situations in a calmer manner. However, the weight is taking a toll on my health and I've had to buy a new wardrobe. Has anyone been successful losing weight while taking this med? I feel like I have to choose between being happy or being thin.

Lucas B replied: "I have lost over 100 pounds and I was on Zoloft. You just need to reduce the amount of calories you eat during the day and start to exercise. Start slow, do some light cardio (swimming is fantastic). Do some weight training also (muscle burns fat). You can loose weight you just need to be dedicated. BSC Employee"

How long to lose the weight after quitting Zoloft? I've gained 60 lbs in 3 years from this stuff... Normally weigh 140 and can eat whatever I want... Tried everything (low cal, low carb, high cardio and weight training...) So now we're tapering me off of it. People with ACTUAL experience please answer... not just "point seekers."

Is it possible to lose weight while taking Zoloft? I am taking zoloft(100 mg) and also trying to lose a great amount of weight. I have heard zoloft causes weight gain. If I stick to my low calorie diet and continue to exercise will I be able to lose weight?

How do I lose weight while on Zoloft? I am sixteen years old, 5'7", and very overweight (210 pounds). I am trying to lose weight, but my metabolism is slow, because I am taking Zoloft 200 milligrams for depression, anxiety, and OCD, and one of the side effects is slowed down metabolism. Because of this, no matter what I do, I cannot even lose a pound. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Kim J replied: "Hmm... I'm not sure combining medicines is a great idea. My trainer recommended 8 hour energy for my lethargy, and I've lost 15 pounds in the past 2 months without doing anything different (actually - I weighed myself after a week of eating buffets in Vegas, so it amazed me even moreso)"
