How can I get off Toprol XL? I've been on it for about 7 years. I'm 27 and I take 25mg daily. It was prescribed to me for symptoms associated with Mitral Valve Prolapse. The three main reasons I want off - sex drive is pretty much gone, I want to have children in the next couple of years, and I don't want to be taking a pill everyday for the rest of my life unless it's a vitamin. I know Toprol can be a libido killer and I've read that you can't take Toprol while pregnant. How can I wean myself as I know you can't just abruptly stop taking it?

96dock replied: "If the reason you were placed on Toprol was only mitral valve prolapse, stopping it should not be a problem. The dose you are currently on is very small. Therefore you would not likely need to be weaned off of it. If you were on a higher dose (the maximum dose is 200 mg daily), then you would need to be weaned. You should discuss this with your doctor."

How does someone get off of toprol xl safely...? what are the side effects? can you tell me what happens..and how to do it safely??

Would trying to wean myself of off Diovan be a bad idea? I'm 22, heart condition, healty, not overweight. I was taking Toprol but it was messing me up. I think I got over the symptoms of not having it in my system. I'm wondering if going off Diovan would hurt me. Currently my blood pressure is 150/70 with the Diovan.

angel replied: "I take diovan along with plendil my blood pressure is 117/72 without the diovan my blood pressure is 180/100 if you want to get off diovan you should talk to your DR, you may just need another blood pressure pill to go along with diovan. but never go off meds, without DRS. help.just keep working with your DR it just takes time for the DR and you to find out what works. hope this helps."

sansrival replied: "Yes, weaning yourself off Diovan is a bad idea. You are still young & already hypertensive. It might be due to genetics. Is there any hypertensive in the family? or probably there is abnormalities in your ECG or blood chemistry results which makes it high. with Diovan, your BP is 150/70, if you try weaning off from it, it will be higher and complications of hypertension are being avoided. In fact, they are more dangerous. The complications may include stroke, coronary artery disease, renal problem or even problems in the eye, which may include retinopathies ( common with hypertensive & diabetics). Start monitoring your BP and record it. Follow up with your doctor & show him your monitoring. If the BP is still high despite regular intake of medications, then a higher dose or a combination may be given to you until your BP is well controlled. Treatment with hypertension is not only taking medications regulary but also dieting. Low salt, low fat diet should be followed. Stress can add to increase BP. Lifestyle modification is also important. Avoid smoking if you are a smoker. Avoid alcohol! Sleep early & dont abuse yourself."

Sandra K replied: "I also take diovan for hbp anlong with propanalol and a water pill I would stay on it until your pressure get under control then talk to your md about getting off it"

I'm currently on Diovan & Toprol, but want to switch to natural supplements instead. Which ones would be best? I'd really like to get off of those prescription drugs and put healthier and natural supplements in my body. I'm just unsure as to which supplements would work in place of Diovan and Toprol. (I was put on them to lower my blood pressure.)

the_only_solorose replied: "diovan and toprol are antihypertensives, they do indeed control your blood pressure...the fact is, there are NO natural supplements that you can purchase over the counter to replace this type of medication. There are some things you can do to improve your health however, suggest you read a book by Dr. Louis Ignarro, titled "NO More Heart Disease". It has some excellent information on your cardiovascular system and how to best maintain it."

oldtimekid2 replied: "That's a really tricky question without a doctor's okay, especially if either of those drugs have addiction or withdrawal issues. Your safest bet would be to talk to a doctor or at least a Pharmacist to check on the safest way to get off of those two. As far as natural ways to help with blood pressure, there are quite a few options available. Aside from diet and exercise, you could also try some natural supplements that are beneficial like Fish Oil, Hawthorn Berries, L-Arginine, C12 Peptides (from milk protein casein), Bonito Peptides, and Garlic"

any natural doctors out there.Every 4 weeks my heart starts racing and I get sick to my stomach..See details? My heart will start racing. I get light headed and sick to my stomach. I also experience nightmares, and cold sweats. I go to the bathroom and have a loose stool. Once I go to the bathroom, I feel better. My heart rate comes down and everything is o.k. In March. I had a bout with LOne atrial fibrillation. I was placed on Toprol xl. Cardiologist took me off Toprol.Went through several weeks of withdrawals. All my tests came back normal. No structural problems in the heart. Doc encourages me to work out. I started supplementing with coenzyme q10, magnesium, hawthorn berry, vitamin c, vitamin e, fish oil caps, alpha lipoic acid, l carnitine. I have never cleansed. Periopdically I get some arm and chest pain, but not daily. No problems doing cardiovascular activities.

ashleysoccergoalie replied: "Well It could be a GI Infection or a Urinary bladder infection sometimes other systems will attack you heart or it cold be a side effect from the supplements but consult yourdoctor who will know primarily the best choice of treatment for you."

dandelion replied: "I may be wrong, but this sounds more like blood pressure that is bringing on panic attacks. Also, you may have plaque building on your ateries too. The Hawthrone berries are very good for the heart, but you need to evaluate your eating habits closely and slow up on bacon or alot of red meat in your diet. I say this because you are troubled more at night, late evening by your description, which occurs after eating supper. Irretiable bowels are symptomatic to what we eat and our bowels tell on us by rejecting the food quickly, however the flip side is that you have a great working colon. Purifing the blood mildly, the lympmatic and endocrine sytem with Dandelion leaf and root added into your food intake. It also combats stomach disorders and aids the entire digestive tract. I encourage you to look it up on the internet and you will problem fix 95% of what you are suffering from using it alone. You can buy it by the ounce on. As for the heart racing at night, night sweats, you must have a job that is physical. Sometimes, especially in summertime, you are pushing your body and then in the evenings you are resting, so when you go to bed at night, you suddenly get this burst of energy while in your sleep and wake up terrified (panic attack). My husband deals with this constantly. If you drink catnip tea before bed, that will go away and leave you rested and less likely to have a panic attack. When you go over to go to contact page and ask her about the heart building herbal tea that she carries. I buy direct because I live about 5 miles from her shop, but she has it in the shop and I didn't see it on the website. I hope this helps and commend yourself for asking instead of ignoring these mild but serious alarms. PS: The heart races during bowel movement, there is a name for it and I can't remember, but this is how Elvis died. That's why enemas and suppostories can be dangers."

what are the withdrawal effects of toprol xl?? my mom is on the 50 mg and she wants to get off of it slowly to take another medication.( i don't know the name of it). and she wants to know how to get off of it safely and what are the withdrawal effects??

Holly P replied: "My husband was just prescribed this and its awful. You cant stop cold turkey, you have to wean yourself. The best way to do this is to call the doctor. If she didnt have any of the side effects of the drug then she shouldnt have withdrawal effects. All it does is slow your heart rate down so if shes off of it and has a past with rapid heart rates then her heart rate might speed back up. Either way she needs to call the doctor or even a pharmacist to see what they suggest."

jdm z33yih replied: "Toprol XL should be taken continuously. When ending Toprol (Metoprolol) treatments, dosage should be lowered gradually over a period of about 2 weeks. Do not stop taking this drug unless directed to do so by your doctor, abrupt withdrawal may cause chest pain, breathing difficulties, increased sweating, and unusually fast or irregular heartbeat. It is best to take this medication at the same time every day. There are other beta blockers that she can try including: Sectral (acebutolol), Tenormin (atenolol), Zebeta (bisoprolol), Corgard (nadolol), Bystolic, Blocadren (timolol), or the doctor can change her medication to an ARB (Angiotensin II receptor Blockers): Diovan & HCTZ, Lotrel, etc."

When should I quit taking toprol xl for blood pressure? I have been on toprol xl 200 mg along with benachar 40 mg for high blood pressure for a couple years now. four months ago I began a weight loss diet and regular exercise and have lost weight and lowered my blood pressure from 150/90 to 116/72 and my pulse runs slow around 52 beats which leaves me tired sometimes. has anyone been on these medications and if so how do you slowly get off it as I don't feel i need it anymore. what should I do. thanks Ralond

Tammy M replied: "ask ur doctor before going off any meds, especially for something as serious as high bp, u will prolly need to be weaned off of them, or he may just lower the dos"

Beta Blocker effect on sperms? Does the Beta Blocker (Toprol XL) has an effect of the amount of sperms? If male is planing a family, should he get off the medication for a while?

John N replied: "shouldn't affect your sperm. It might affect your ability to get an erection."

Klonopin - Too much or Too little? I've been taking klonopin for the last six years along with toprol xl, both prescribed by my doc for atrial fibrillation or what I eventually found to be heart palpitations related to MSG and too much salt. Anyway, now that I'm stuck on both meds, I've tried experimenting with dosage levels mainly with klonopin. The reason is I felt and still do feel that klonopin creates some kind of low-mood, like irritability sometimes to the extreme along with sensitivity to sounds... which really set off the anger. I wasn't like this before taking either med. In fact my doc first ran me through a series of SSRI's with no chance of luck there... they all made me feel extreme rage with irrational thinking... surprised I didn't off myself at that time. Anyway, I went three days taking .5mg of klon to see how I felt. The irritability seemed to diminish after first 36 hours but then I started having very pronounced irregular heart beats. At the advice of a friend, I started taking the normal dose .5 in the morning and .5 at evening... now the irritability is back and strong. I can't even go into a store without wanting to tear into someone for practically anything. It's like my patience and tolerance has evaporated. My doctor (5th one in six years) has no clue and wants to up the dose. I don't want more if it's going to make me even worse. I don't like feeling angry and anti-social a 1mg per day... I'm hoping someone out there has some insight or experience that could help me in the direction of returning to normal not getting worse. Again, doctors have been no help... they always want me to "take more" or add another pill. Any insight/ideas are greatly and deeply appreciated!

WhatdidIsay! replied: "I took Klonopin for general anxiety disorder. The drug is addictive and I was up to 6mg a day, my body needed more and without it I was a complete mess. Klonopin with-drawls are the worse. I was forced off the medication and did not manage well, just like you described above. I am currently on Xanax 4mg a day. Your doctor wants to up the dose because your body is not satisfied with the dose you are taking now. Most doctors knows Klonopin and Xanax work and many do not like to prescribe it because they are addictive and very hard to wean off of. You are like me I had so many doctors too in the past 12 years I cannot even count them. You need to do what makes you feel better, but I still believe since you experimented with your dosages with a medication like Klonopin is causing this."
