Bipolar II: Lamotragine (Lamictal) + Depakote = SIDE EFFECTS? I had taken Depakote a few years ago for Bipolar, and it was great... Until it gradually stopped working. I was on Lamictal and Lithium for a year or two and then my doctor added Depakote. I took the first dose yesterday, 250mg. I could barely get out of bed and am half way falling asleep right now. I guess that's probably normal but what's up with this racing heartbeat??? I read on drugs.com that Depakote causes the Lamictal half-life to double in most cases and to decrease the Lamictal dose if I'm going to be on Depakote as well. My doctor never said anything.... Physically and mentally, I feel pretty weird right now.

bluejeanrein replied: "I would advise you to call your doctor. You can do research on the Internet until the end of time, but all that's going to do is make you worried about all the dangerous side effects.....the best way to handle this, in my opinion, is to speak with a professional about the side effects you are experiencing now that you added Depakote. Also, you need to speak with someone about adjusting dosage -- please don't take that upon yourself (sounds like you wouldn't, but just in case)."

Semisodium Valproate (depakote) side effects? Hello, friday i got put on depakote by my doctor for manic depression. He put me up to 500mg twice a day. The past 2 days ive felt physically and mentally exhausted, even falling asleep at work and got sent home today because i work in a dangerous environment. Has anyone else had similar experiences? i called the doc today and he said reduce it to one dose of 500mg a day. I feel pretty awful right now, i don't know how this is going to affect my work. Thanks Emma

Susan Storm replied: "When I was on a small dose of Depakote (250mg) I felt fine but when they upped me to 500 it was awful. I was walking around in a fog & passing out standing up. You need to talk to your DR ASAP! 500mg might be too much. It was for me. Sorry you feel bad. I've been there."

Depakote ER side effects? My boyfriend has seizures and so he has been on this medicine called depakote ER. Each pill has 500mg and he takes them twice a day. He also has a brain aneurysm. It started about a month ago where he has trouble speaking occasionally. He says that he knows what he wants to say but he cannot say it. Also, just recently I will be sitting with him and all of a sudden he will just stare off and he will not come out of it until I touch him or shake him. When I ask him about it he says he does not remember doing any of that. Both of these things are beginning to happen more and more frequently and he refuses to go to his doctor. Are these side effects from the pills that he is taking or could it be from his brain aneurysm? Please help - any information would be great. Thank you.

ireply2you replied: "Most people who take Depakote ER don't have too much trouble with side effects. That's one of the reasons it's used so much. The most common complaints (usually not too severe) are: tiredness (sometimes with slower thinking) dizziness upset stomach vomiting tremor (shaking of the hands or other parts of the body) hair loss weight gain changes in behavior (depression in adults, irritability in children) If you notice any of these problems, call the doctor. Sometimes the doctor can help by changing the amount of Depakote ER prescribed. No one should stop taking Depakote ER or change the amount they take without their doctor's guidance. Stomach upset from Depakote ER may be less of a problem if the pills are taken on a full stomach. Stomach upset is more likely when another seizure medicine with similar side effects (for example, Tegretol) is also being used. Tremor (shaking of the hands or other body parts) tends to be worse when the level of Depakote ER in the blood is highest, 7 to 14 hours after the pills are taken. Anxiety or caffeine also may make it worse. Tremor may be less of a problem with Depakote ER than with regular Depakote, since the highest level of medicine in the blood usually is not quite as high. Weight gain affects 30% to 50% of people who take Depakote ER. It is more common in adult women but can affect anyone. The average gain for adults is 15 pounds. Exercise and a reduced-calorie diet can be very helpful. It's uncertain whether weight gain is greater when higher doses of Depakote ER are taken. Hair loss occurs in 5% to 10% of people who take Depakote ER. The hair almost always grows back after the Depakote ER is stopped, but it often has a different texture. (For example, it may grow in curly instead of straight.) People who have just started taking Depakote ER (or who have just started taking a larger amount) should be careful during activities that might be dangerous, until they know whether they are having any side effects. Allergic reactions Allergic reactions such as rashes are less common with Depakote ER than with most other seizure medicines. Even so, you should report any rash to the doctor or nurse right away, especially if treatment has just begun. It's rare for the rash to be serious, but don't ignore it. It's often necessary to switch to a different seizure medicine. A very small number of people who take Depakote ER develop life-threatening disorders. Long-term side effects Some people who have taken Depakote ER or other valproate medicines (such as Depakote) for many years have experienced bone loss and a few other disorders. Taking both calcium and vitamin D may help to prevent this kind of problem. Many doctors recommend a bone density test to identify which people need treatment for bone loss"

Side effects of Depakote, do they go away? When do the side effects go away and what do you consider serious side effects?

anarchy_queen69 replied: "Most meds have side effects they are supposed to go away... I've been on Depakote for a month and I get really tired followed by insomnia followed by extreme tiredness followed by insomnia read the label for serious side effects but the minor side effects usually do go away"

cgeb replied: "It's different for everyone, but usually within a few months. Serious side effects are anything that interfere negatively with your daily schedule."

What are the side effects of coming off of Depakote ER? And how long does it take to come out of your system. I have been on it 6 years. Has anyone else been on it that long. I go to the psych dr. Tomorrow but would like to know of others experiences. I want to know what I am going to be going through and if the withdraws if any, are going to be bad and how long will they last- reminder I have been on it along time. Thanks so much for everyone's help!
