Citalopram Medication in Questions
just started taking Citalopram anti-depression medication anyone have any experiences with it? Its the Generic for Celexa im taking a low dose (10 mg) right now. Im pretty young though. Does anyone have information about it or personal experiences?

ograynoldaz replied: "I'm supposed to be taking it as well, but I'm kind of nervous about it, how's it going with you?"

Tanya C replied: "I took it for 9 weeks until I came out in rash (don't worry this is quite rare). Most people gets nauseous with it (I didn't), however as with any antidepressant your symptoms will get worse before they get better. I also had other negative side effects (obssessive thoughts, dissociation) but I realised that it was just this drug, and it doesn't happen for everybody. When it worked it was fantastic, shame it worked for only 1 week befor3e I had to come off. It is generally quite good so don't worry about my experiances with it (I have found with a different antidepressant I have had none of these other side effects). Good luck"

ti5142 replied: "Due to a burnout with major depression, my husband has been taking Celexa for several years successfully along with Wellbutrin (Paxil had been tried but was not effective & had too many side effects). However he seemed to reach a plateau and thus another medication was tried (Remeron) which was a disaster (he slept about 16 hours and day and gained 15-20 lbs in a month or so). The doctor suggested starting on Lexapro by the same manufacturer as Celexa - it was developed by isolating a particular molecule of Celexa. Apparently 47% of patients who did not respond to Celexa treatment responded to treatment with Lexapro. It's really trial and error because everyone responds differently to the medications and side effects are more or less tolerable."

matt c replied: "hi there. i have been taking citalopram now for 2 years started on 20 mgs daily and am now on the maximum dose ie 60 mgs a day . the drug took around 3 weeks to start having any effect upon the depression i started taking it for . i experienced a few of the side effects that come with it . do a google search for a full list , non of which were scary or of a major concern . the drug which i still currently take daily has now almost no side effects and i am working as a partner of a company as i have for years and have just got married . so it is very possible to pull back from a fairly deep hole as i was in and this drug had a big part of that motivation you will understand can lack when depression hits . good luck i hope that your experience is good , if you want a more in deapth insight or have further questions."

My doctor has had me on this medication citalopram I am tired of taking anything what can i do to stop taking? it i only believe in taking natural supplements don't believe in taking anything for a long period of time

Ann replied: "I'm like you I don't like to take any meds generally because I tend to react badly to just about all of them but I will take them while I look for a more natural approach to the problems.. as Hippocrates said 'let food be your medicine' . - St Johns Wort seems to help some folks--. if you are of the age for hormonal changes I hope the Dr checked you for this so that he can treat the cause of the depression and not just the symptoms! has a lot of info easily read...."

Is it safe to take Karma pills with the antidepressant citalopram? My mother bought me some "Karma" pills which are for low mood, i don't think they're prescription antidepressants so i thought it'd be ok to take with my prescribed medication Citalopram. Is it safe to take both?

Kieron M replied: "It probably is ok to take them but you should check with the prescriber of your medication or a pharmacist first. Some herbal remedies - and I am assuming that this is what these pills are - can have possible interactions with the drugs in the class that Citalopram is. An example of this would be St John's Wort. If these karma pills are homeopathic rather than herbal they will be fine. I hope this helps."

SUTHHERN REDD replied: "Ummmmm. No. Number one your mother should not be trying to self medicate you when you have a prescribed medication for Citalopram. She should know better as a mother. I realize she might be trying to help but she isn't. Taking a herbal supplement - not a prescription medication - with a prescribed medication is not good unless recommended by your doctor. and most won't do that. There are prescribed medications out there for many reasons and if one doesn't work another will....there are all kinds on the market and sometimes you start with one at a low dosage and have to build up on that dosage. For example: most anti's have a level in mg's of medication that start low. You will build up to a certain number which your doctor will work with you on getting to that point. With most people when they begin a medication they do start at the lowest dosage to build up to a point that you and the doctor - along with how you are doing on it - is all rolled into one. I would *not take this "karma" pill until you discuss it with your doctor. I don't think it will be safe for you to do this.... You can also call any pharmacist - Walgreen's, CVS etc.....and ask them what their opinion is. They give these medications to people prescribed everyday and if you read the ingredients to them they will tell you to or not to take it......I would go by that in making a real decision and if you don't want to do that then get into see the dr that prescribed your Citalopram to begin with and talk to him or her about it... -- good luck..."

What organic matter is Citalopram and its constituents derived from? I am curious as to what "rain forest plant" or organic material is the molecules that composes the Citalopram molecule/drug derived from? I know nearly all pharmaceuticals are at least original derived from preexisting sources(such as rare plants and similar materials). So I am wanting to know what Citalopram(a medication I am currently taking as well) comes from originally even though it is likely synthetically made now. Thanks For help

Dr OChem replied: "I don't know what you know about nearly all pharmaceuticals and their origin. In one manner of speaking, your assertion must be true on its face that to interfere with our biological machinery, drugs will perform as a mimic (agonist or antagonist) of a biochemical agent. However, that may or may not have been the path to their discovery. Pharmaceutical companies have many broad screening programs using natural products and various synthesized organic compounds. Certainly, we know that penicillins and various steroid drugs came from natural products. I believe benzodiazepines were discovered from entirely synthetic compounds. Looking at some of this history of Citalopram, it appears to follow a more synthetic route, though some natural product may have been modeled at several generations of drugs before it. If you look at wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citalopram), you can learn that it is an SSRI which is loosely related to Prozac and before it Benadryl and before it neoantergan. According to Wikipedia, Daniel Bovet was awarded a Nobel Prize for his work on neoantergan and George Rieveschl synthesized Benadryl to overcome side effects of neoantergan. Looking at the structure of neoantergan, it does not appear to have an obvious connection to any natural products as it origin, but that is only a guess on my part. However, even the leap across different modes of action for one class of drugs to another as an indication of a natural product origin is a huge leap."

Is there a similar medication to Citalopram which doesnt contain lactose? I was due to start Citalopram today after feeling depressed for quite some time. I needed it for a boost, as i have no energy or motivation at all. I got home with the medication to find it contains lactose, which i have an intolerance to. Does anyone know if their is a similar med which doesnt contain lactose? I know it sounds abit odd but i was looking forward to trying this, as my doctor told me it would help with my moods and make me feel abit happier in myself. If anyone could help that'd be great! Thanks!

needtoknow replied: "There are many different types of anti depressants that your doctor could prescribe for you which would have the desired effect for lifting your mood. Citalopram does seem to be a popular one at the moment but it it duelly used for people who suffer from anxiety or panic attacks as well as depression. I am not sure about the ingredients and am assuming you are talking about the tablet form. Do you know you can get citalopram in liquid drops which may not contain lactose?? It doesn't taste very nice but its only 4 drops to 10mg so you can mix it with juice."
