J B replied: "They did nothing wrong. Anyone with a penicillin allergy has the 'POTENTIAL for having an allergic reaction to Cephalexin. It does not mean it is going to happen and many people can take this med without any problems. In your case, you were sensitive to one antibiotic and now, you are sensitive to two - simple as that. You list PCN and Cephalexin as allergies. There are many more antibiotics that you can use and you may in the future have an allergic reaction to some of those too. Now for treatment, you need to stop the antibiotic and start taking some over the counter benadryl as directed on the box. It takes about 72 hours for an allergic reaction to clear your system so you need to take benadryl regularly until the dots are gone. Then, you need to make an appointment with your family physician and get another antibiotic or, you can go without and your condition will probably clear up either way since you have already had some antibiotics. The benadryl will take care of the itching and the red dots."

HELP! Allergic reaction to Cephalexin/Keflex antibiotic?? Has anyone out there ever gotten itchy hives from cephalexin or keflex antibiotics?

the_only_solorose replied: "If you have, you need to call your doctor immediately, the obvious allergic reaction could get a lot worse fairly quickly, and then you or someone with you ends up calling 911."

junebug replied: "Stop taking the medicine and call your doctor so they can change the rx. OTC Benedryl will help with the hives."

T replied: "I haven't from that medication, but from another anitbiotic that I was given. Stop taking it and get yourself some benadryl or something similar."

MR replied: "It's totally possible. I've had patients who are allergic to keflex. Please stop this antibiotics right away and see your doctor to have it switched to another one. Do not wait until your breathing is compromised."

Coco replied: "Benadryl, and call the doctor."

How do you know if you are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide? I got some meds from my derm... Benzac wash 5% Cleocin gel differin gel cephalexin so I have acne and all, which everything is working but I didnt use the Benzac wash in 2 days bc it burn my skin. I lather and rinse it, yet my skin had chemical burns comparable to a sunburn and it did peel. I tried proactiv before which irritated my skin. Not so badly, and you keep proactiv on all day. However, could this be an allergic reaction? Or maybe just sensitive to the Benz... or just bad in combination with the other products. I got a dermy appt. Weds. She say just use purpose soap and the other meds until then. What test can she do to see if I am allergic too? I may become pregnant so she gave me the cephalexin instead. I only used the Benzac wash 2 1/2 days before my face was burnt like that. I quit for 4 days and just used the purpose soap she told me to sub if the wash irritated my skin and now it is fine. The benzac wash sped up acne clearing, but it hurt.

RayeKaye replied: "That stuff used all together will cause your skin to be very sensitive - shame on your dermatologist for not explaining that to you!! You may have an allergy to benzoyl peroxide, so you should probably get back in touch with your doc. To rule it out yourself, you could stop everything for a week, then just try the Benzac wash and see if you still have the burning. How long are you going to be on the cephalexin? This one surprises me - normally doctors stick with minocycline or doxycycline because of the anti-inflammatory properties. I'd get that clarified, too."

Do you know about the generic for Keflex called Cephalexin? I was treated for mastitis with Tylenol with codeine and Keflex. I had severe vomiting and went to the ER and they changed the pain med. Now I'm having throat swelling and pain. Does this sound like a side effect of the Keflex? I don't have any other allergic reaction signs? I called the manufacturer but they were no help. I guess I can have the antibiotic switched to something else but I just want the treatment over with not just start another one. I have 5 days left. I am going to call the doc, but any advice or experience you have in using this would be most appreciated. I do have nausea and diarrhea which are expected side effects.

Lil Mama replied: "Call your doctor right away. Antibiotics may vary in side effects. Nausea and diarrhea are normal and should not be severe enough for you to discontinue with your therapy, however, you should be concerned about throat swelling and and pain that you are experiencing, b/c this is very rare."

sweet sue replied: "With the statement of "throat swellling" you need to go to your Dr. or the ER asap. It is possible you are having an alllergic reaction and throat swelling is a sign of it. You can continue to expand the throat swelling to include difficulty breathing and even a shock like state. Sometimes these allergice reactions can be fatal so see someone now."

Am I allergic to penicillin too? I just found out that I have an allergy to Cephalexin (antibiotic). People with allergies to penicillin are also allergic to Cephalexin, but I want to know if the reverse is also true. My sis and dau both are allergic to penicillin, but I myself have never had a reaction to penicillin. I've also had Cephalexin before and never had a reaction to that too. Just got out of the ER today. Had to get an EPI shot, Benadryl through the IV, and a steroid. I'm sporting a major poison ivy rash and some of the blisters popped and got infected. I was having problems breathing, throat closing up, my tongue swelled, had a taste like paint in my mouth and my rash turned into this major ugly, swollen, angry, beet-red/purplish color. All but the rash itself cleared up in an hour or two at the ER. Now on a steroid for the poison ivy rash and off the antibiotics. I've Googled but cannot find an answer to my question: If someone is allergic to Cephalexin, are they now alleric to penicillin too? Thanks!

Army mom replied: "Wow, you really had a rough time of it. Cephalosporins are chemically related to Penicillin, but are not exactly the same. I am allergic to penicillin, but can take Cephalaxin cautiously. Your reaction to the Cephalexin was pretty severe. I'd ask your doctor for testing for a penicillin allergy before I would risk taking it again."

Tom replied: "wow"

thewebster_123 replied: "You aren't necessarily allergic to both. I can take cephalosporins but not "-cillins" Because of the severity of your reaction I would also be very careful if you do need penicillin. (I would recommend never getting an injection of penicillin and making sure you are close to an emergency room if you would need to take the tablets). Unfortunately there is no test for drug allergies. You should certainly ask your physician for her/his opinion to whether or not you should avoid penicillin. Hope you're feeling better soon!"

SALLI58 replied: "Allergic reactions to penicillin antibiotics are common. Cephalosporins are other antibiotics that fight many of the same infections as penicillin. They may be an option for patients who are allergic to penicillin. However, cephalosporins and penicillins have similar chemical structures. Some patients who are allergic to penicillin are also allergic to cephalosporin, but information about the frequency of cephalosporin allergy in patients with penicillin allergy is limited. With some drugs, such as penicillin and cephalosporin, doctors can perform a "skin test" for allergic reactions by administering small amounts of the drug under the skin. However, rather than perform a skin test, many doctors simply avoid cephalosporin in patients with penicillin allergy."

Daniel F replied: "it is VERY probable - they have a similar chemical structure - i would suggest that you have a 'skin test' to determine which antibiotics you are allergic too"

I have recently been per scribed CEPHALEXIN for a tooth ache. But, I feel tired all the time, why is this? As a child I tested positive for a minor reaction with penicillin. I read a list of possible allergic reaction to penicillin I have none of them so fare and it’s my third day on it. The Dentist did make me aware that there could be a small chance of reaction. I need to know if the tiredness is because of the antibodies or a allergic reaction?

Home remedy for bumpy face/allergic reaction? I'm 17. I've never really gotten "breakouts". Sure i've gotten a few pimples here and there ever so often. But what the heck is this? The night before yesterdayI put on a face mask that I had gotten from a friend. It's kinda old. Well the next morning I had about ten to twelve small bumps around my nose, close to my mouth, and one fairly large one near my lip, then another one like that on the other side. They hurt when I crinkle my mouth, or touch them. I have had a fever blister for the last week or so could that have anything to do with it? If I remember right they kinda itched, but that could be the blister? I am also on antibiotics *Cephalexin* and some ointment for the blister *Zovirax* Could these bumps be the cause of an allergic reaction to the medicines or the mask? I've washed them with Proactive, and used the revitalizing mask/scrub that usually works, however I haven't noticed any change. I can't go to the doctor this week because I have a stockshow the whole we week*. Can anybody tell me anything to make the bumps go away, or make them not hurt so bad? Thanks!!

Melissa replied: "That happened to me before..It stinks. What i used was Neosporin. You know, the stuff in the yellow tube that most people use as a disinfectant? It works great. just dab it on the affected area with a q-tip, and leave it in overnight. it's kinda slimy, and your pillows might get gross, but my reaction was a whole lot better the next day."

hazel_360 replied: "These remedies can help with any type of bumps not just the ones indicated. Calamine lotion is an effective remedy in hives. It relieve the itch. Other astringents that may help hives include witch hazel (especially chilled) and zinc oxide. By dabbing milk of magnesia on the lesions, provides some relief in hives. As milk of magnesia is an alkaline solution it helps in removing the irritating itchy sensation. To stop the itching in hives get 1/2 a tub filled with warm water, add 1/2 cup cornstarch and 1/2 cup baking soda. Soaking yourself at least once a day can make a lot of difference. Oatmeal can be really useful for hives. Pour one cup of boiling water over one tablespoon oatmeal. Let it steep for thirty minutes. Strain it, and then apply the liquid on your hives with a cotton ball. This also works to relive bug bites. Herbal manuals often list a poultice of the crushed leaves of chickweed as a remedy for itchy skin. Some people make a paste of water and cream of tartar and apply it to the hives, replacing it when the paste dries and gets crumbly. Avoid the substances that trigger hives. If you know in advance that you will be exposed to a trigger, a preventive dose of antihistamine can prevent or minimize the hives. Coconut oil may be applied to the portions with eczema. It will help the skin to stay soft. Walking or jogging should be resorted to in order to activate the bowels. Sunbathing is also beneficial as it kills the harmful bacteria and should be resorted to early in the morning, in the first light of dawn. A light mudpack applied over the sites of the eczema is also helpful. The pack should be applied for an hour at a time and should be repeated twice or thrice a day. Dry the peel of a watermelon, the large variety that has a deep green skin and bright red pulp with black seeds. Burn the dired peel to an ash. Take a spoonful of this ash and add enough warm coconut oil to make a paste. Apply this on the eczematous patch. A serving of watercress every day is said to keep eczema at bay, along with a daily drink of parsley, spinach, celery, and wheat grass. Make a mixture of starch water after cooking rice mixed with turmeric powder. Apply this mixture to eczema affected areas. Try another remedy for curing eczema. Mix curd and Bengal gram flour or besan and apply it over the affected areas and then wash it after ten to fifteen minutes. A tablespoon of corn oil is recommended in breakfast and in evening meal to help reduce eczema and other skin disorders. Fresh apricot leaves juice is useful for treating eczema."

Amelia replied: "At night after you wash your face, apply a layer of Aloe Vera to your face before you go to sleep. Aloe Vera is the green gel that you put on your skin for sunburn, but it has been my acne remedy for almost a year now. It is non-clogging, anti-bacterial, cheap (if you don't have it around the house, Target has it), and it is a coolant so it relieves painful blemishes. After a week or two you will see a great response."

ive been taking Cephalexin...?? I was prescribed Cephalexin 500mg. It is an antibiotic which makes bacteria go away. Ive been takeing it for 2 days now, 2 pills once a day. Today i noticed that on my cheek, towards the bottom it is a little red, like someone hit me. Is this an allergic reaction?? My doc wasnt in today so my mom talked to someone else who is there if my doc isnt. The person said that i should stop the cephalexin for today and take benadryl. Please tell me if you know why my face is a little red. Its like a spot. It is only on my face, not body???? it is also a lil itchy

TLM replied: "it could be a mild reaction from the antibiotics. Tell your mom to call a pharmacist at any local drug store and ask them what to do. If you start having any trouble breathing you need to go to the E.R. make sure no matter what that you do get in touch with your doctor as soon as possible."

Frustrated with medical issue not responding to treatment, any ideas? Sorry this is on the gross side, but I'm so frustrated that my drs can't figure out what's wrong. I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem and may know what might work. I am 36 weeks pregnant and have something that is like an allergic reaction. We thought it was new toilet paper, it's not. I've been seeing the dr about this for the last 3 months, but nothing is working. Things we've tried: changing toilet papers, hypoallergenic laundry detergent, steroid creams, antifungal creams, cephalexin, oral anti fungal medication, azithromiacin, different everything like soaps, towels, etc. Absolutely nothing is working. The dr is saying it will probably go away after I'm done being pregnant, but that's still another three + weeks. I haven't been able to sleep more than four or five hours a night because of the pain, and nothings helping. If anyone has any ideas I can bring up at my next appt. I'd appreciate it. Ok, it's just embarassing, that's all. It's just a massively painful rash- irritated, dry, red, slightly swollen. I am having a planned c-section due to a recurring fistula I had from my first baby...I almost wonder if it isn't hormonal if it could be an infection related to that. However, I always develop hypothyroidism during pregnancy so I was thinking it may just be hormonal, like many of you are suggesting.

reina_de_trebol replied: "Symptoms?"

Niinnaa replied: "Excuse me, but you forgot to mention the gross part. I'll check back later>>>>>>>>>>"

C replied: "The changes that occur during pregnancy are legion. There is generally no good answer especially with your problem. Worse, the one good answer is: "When you are done being pregnant, the problem will probably go away". I know that's not what you want to here, but....As the father of seven children, I have seen a multitude of pregnancy related conditions that will only go away once the pregnancy ends."

Finchy replied: "You forgot to explain what exactly it is you have..an allergic reaction between your legs? Odds are you are reacting to the hormones from being pregnant - not much you can do except wait to deliver and see if they subside within a few days of delivery. Are they going to let you deliver naturally or do they plan to do a c-section in case it is something else? your doctor should prescribe you something for the pain - something stronger than Tylenol - i wish i had some other ideas for you but a hormonal reactions is about the best thing I can think of based on your lack of symptoms listed. Hope you feel better soon - good luck"

sydrinesmom replied: "You are not explaning your reaction, do you have a rash??"

gsp100677 replied: "You haven't actually described the exact symptoms so it's hard to say. However, a guess based on your comments & doctors diagnosis, sounds like some kind of eczema/contact dermatitis style reaction you're suffering, and it's likely related to hormonal and stress changes due to the pregnancy. It sounds severe though, & it may be worth trying some high quality alternative therapies.... Acupuncture has lots of supporting evidence, and a long history of refinement and success - find a good one with experience of pregnant women at 36 weeks. Hypotherapy can be excellent at pain relief, and relieving the symptoms themselves if they're stress triggered - again, lots of supporting evidence and long history. Homeopathy is commonly known as a quackery quite frankly, and I kinda see it that way myself to an extent, and almost all the evidence suggests that when it works it only ever works due to a placebo effect. However, placebo's work 30% of the time and that's a better record than heart transplant surgery, and I seem to run into a lot of people recently who say it worked for them when NOTHING else would. So possibly worth a try. Make sure you clear the individual treatment (brand & model) with your Doc, and buy from a reputable source so you know what's in there. There are some astoundly effective herbal remedies out there (people don't realise but actually some of the most powerful remedies are herbal, and recognised but not fully utilised by medical science - such as tea tree oil, etc.) But, you MUST find a very reputable source & brand, with lots of good testimonials and get the ingredients thoroughly checked out by your doc. Herbal supplements that are otherwise perfectly fine, can have all kinds of negative effects on a foetus/baby's development - I'm sure you've been told by your doc not to take St. John's Wort supplements as an example. Naturally clear everything with your Doc first, but don't be afraid to push (some Docs can be very resistant to alternative therapy ideas, as they see it as a threat to the logic/rationality of their profession)."

My dog was prescribed Cephalexin for a skin allergy.? After taking this med for 5 days I noticed her getting weaker and not eating. By the 8th day she couldn't get up off the floor and walk. Then she started breathing hard and started wheezing. I had to carry her outside to go to the bathroom. I suspected she was having an allergic reaction to the meds. The vet didn't think too much about it when I questioned him. I told him I took her off the Cephalexin. She seemed to get a little better. She could walk but was very shakey. The vet then prescribed Amoxicillin. Now after the third pill her symptoms are starting to come back. Now I guess she is allergic to this as well. Has anyone experienced this with their dog? If the meds are stopped will she regain her health? That is my concern. I just want her to start eating and walking again. She is 12 years old but up until this happened she was fine.

pixy_stix replied: "Both are derivatives of penicillin. She could very well be allergic to them. I would consider taking her to another vet. Those are not good symptoms at all!"

rapperjade replied: "Cephalexin and Amoxicillin are antibiotics. But I would take her off of them and go get a 2nd opinion from another veterinarian just the same. What you describe is really odd symptioms to have with skin conditions and allergies and suggestions other complications and is worth a second look by another vet."

Teresa V replied: "Mine just started on Amoxicillin today for an infection where she got spayed 2 weeks ago. She hasn't shown any signs of slowing down yet but I am going to keep my eyes open for it. ALso she is 12.8 pounds and getting 125 mg . Maybe your dog is getting too large of a dose. Maybe try another vet...even just call and talk to another vet and see what they say."
