I have alopecia. I have used ointment and am currently taking prednisone by mouth? this is not helping at all. Anyone out there who has experienced this and can offer any suggestions for me. I have also been to (2) specialists. HELP!

Hannah S replied: "Even if prednisone were helping, it is not a long term solution. My suggestion is that you "nurse" your scalp back to health. Change your shampoo, which probably contains sodium lauryl (or laureth) sulfate, the most common surfactant (detergent) and also an irrittant. Keratinocyte growth factor is likely to help, but use it in conjunction with a nourishing serum that will provide also antioxidants, vitamins and everything that can help your scalp recover from whatever it is going through. I can't guarantee a complete recovery, but this regime will give you the best chances. Good luck and best wishes Hannah"

I have Alopecia due to stress, Will my hair grow in my bald spots? I went to the dermatologist april 29th and she gave me steroid shots in my bald spots and prescribed me a gel to apply 2 times a day and prednisone to take for the next 16 days. You think this will work? Any suggestions on making hair grow?

Gary Oster replied: "Hi, Kat. There have been a handful of hair products that use a formula which improve hair retention and hair growth, even for people with alopecia. One is called Nioxin, which is only available through salons. Effectiveness varies depending on the severity of alopecia, but has been pretty effective even in alopecia totalis cases, although periods of patchiness will sometimes occur. One of the effects of the formula is that increases blood flow to the skin surface, so redness can appear if it runs over your forehead, down your neck or shoulders."

Any new alopecia treatments out there? I have had alopecia totalis since 1995, and haven't looked into 'treatment' in the past decade. Just curious if someone has had success with any new procedures.
