can abilify cause heart problems? such as palpitations, chest tightness etc?
Abilify is aripirazole, an antipsychotic which I take for bipolar mania. Just been having chest pain and I can feel my heart beating when i usually am not aware of my heartbeat. Its getting me kinda worried. and im 21yo
Charlie replied: "Can you give some more nformation, please? What is "abilify?" Is it a medicine, or an herb?...
I have never heard that word before. How old are you, what symptoms are you having?"
benjamin h replied: "Ahoy!
I am about to turn 27, serious Bipolar I disorder patient. I took Abilify for approximately 3 weeks and had to stop due to the exact symptoms you are describing--Racing heartbeat, what felt like palpitations. It also caused insomnia and extraordinary restlessness.
My advice is this: Go to the prescribing MD ASAP and describe ALL of your symptoms. Abilify is a relatively new drug and REALLY does not agree with some people. It also has a very long half-life in the body, so in the event your doctor takes you off of it in favour of a different med, expect 2-3 days to pass before you calm down and feel "normal."
Hang in there. I hope this helps.
Regards."
has anyone ever experienced negative physical or mental effects after stopping Abilify? I have stopped taking the abilify around 2 weeks. ago. While I was taking it pretty much for Obcessions and anxiety, I was on a low dose, but it seemed to have made me more tired,. However, I decided to go off of it because we determined that it was causing rapid heart pounding even though the psychiatrist didn't attribute it to the medicine. Now being off of the abilify, the heart pounding has went away, but I feel like I am more physically distracted by noises and also feel like I am more tense Basically, has anyone who has stopped taking abilify ever experience any negative physical or mental symptoms.
Slobberkisses replied: "hi there might be a little anxiety , i was on it and it made me extremely suicidal , abilify is a terrible med , congrats to be off of it ."
lil bit replied: "When I went off it, my OCD seemed to worsen. I am back on it - it also helps me with extreme fatgue....good med for me"
Need Abilify and don't have the money? I've been on Zyprexa for schizophrenia, but couldn't stand the lethargy. I need something else. Maybe Geodon, but I have a weak heart, so I think Abilify might be my best choice. However, I don't have health insurance or the money for it. I'm in the Sacramento area. What are my options?
How do I cope with being the sole caregiver and provider of my child and help my family after I cut off half m? I am a single Mom of a wonderful 6 yr old girl. This year has been one bad thing after another. My mother had 2 heart surgeries and my Grandpa is in the final stage of stomach cancer. I just chopped off half of my thumb while splitting wood and now cannot work. I am on Effexor but still feel overwhelmed with anxiety and depression. Would Abilify help?
AnnieBear replied: "Depression meds take quite a while to kick in and really stabilize your moods. Most people think that because it doesn't start working right away, that the meds don't work at all. Give it some more time, be patient, and hang in there."
Texas Made replied: "EFFEXOR ..GET OFF IT! IT ONLY MAKES IT WORST!"
Betty M replied: "You need only take care of yourself and do the best you can with your daughter at this point. The rest is out of your hands and there is nothing you can do. You are not a miracle worker so be realistic with all this. As much as you love your mom and your grandpa, you have to take care of you, for your daughters sake and your own. Try and let it go and relax with your little girl for now. The rest is in God's hands. What you may need right now is lots of hugs and support for yourself. It won't matter what you take, it will take a month or so for it to start working. If you need immediate relief, talk to your doctor about this and I'm sure she/he will help you. God bless you, hang in there and do something nice for you, but remember you are only one person, not wonder woman as we all think and try to be much of the time."
Andy replied: "Antidepressants can take 4 to 8 weeks to work so give it at least 1 - 2 months before fully evaluating Effexor. Abilify is FDA approved as an adjunct to antidepressants, so it may help. For me, Abilify increased my anxiety so I had to get of of it (with my doctor's help). It did work on my depression however but the anxiety side effect wasn't worth the depression lift. However, I've also heard of cases where it lifts both depression and relieves anxiety. So it's kind of a coin toss. Just be sure to keep in contact with the doctor and let him/her know what's going on so he/she can make the necessary adjustments. Best of luck in your treatment decisions."
Suggestions for slowing heart rate? My doctor thought I might need abilify, so I started taking it about 6 days ago. I stopped after 3 days when my resting heart rate climbed to about 120, but its still about that high. Anyone know how I might be able to slow it down? (Without benadril; I can't take that)
My doc. wants me to take abilify for DID disorder but I read that there are deadly side effects what do I do? heres what the side effect was : Very high fever, rigid muscles, shaking, confusion, sweating, or increased heart rate and blood pressure. These may be signs of a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a rare but serious side effect which could be fatal
justbambi2 replied: "Almost every drug on the market has serious side effects listed, the actual likelyhood of those happening is very slim - hence the drug being allowed on the market.
Abilify is a good drug to have the supervision of a doctor to monitor side effects as well as positive effects. The most common side effects are the minor tremors (hand shaking) and confusion. Much of those will resolve on their own, either by adjusting the dose or the body becoming used to the drug."
it's a BOY! due 6/30/08 replied: "To be honest, you are taking a risk with any medication you take, no matter what it is. Notice that is says "rare" but serious. That means it doesn't happen often so the medication will more than likely help you more than it will hurt you, but that is a personal decision you have to make. But I am sure if you look hard enough into every medication you have taken , you will see a similar side effect warning label."
decemberforever replied: "I took Abilify before for mood swings. It made me so sleepy and disoriented. All those meds do. Try therapy."
darkcloud replied: "Just tell your doctor ,,, No thanks , I don't care for the posible side affects , If you doctor plays down the side affects, just remind them that you might not be all that sick after all , not worth dieing over ,,,"
what medical condition has hot flash's, cold sweets, nights sweets, heart palpitations, clammy sweets,? For about 12 years now I ve had these conditions along with mood swings, and migranes, and non of the drs seem to no what is causing them. It's not pre manipulse, or thyroid, blood work says no problems, all other tests come back neg also. My resting heart rate is quite often high yet the drs. say it's not. AHA says anything over 90 is to high and I also just finished be recertified for bp screening so I no it is to high. I stay fatigued a lot also. Can someone please help me figure out what is going on with me. I m at my ropes end and I can not afford to be hospitalized any more. The bills are going to kill me if what ever is wrong with me doesn't do it first. I have bi-polar but that would not cause the phyical condition, Nor would any of the medicines I was taking. Now the only med I m on is Abilify. I also have autheritise
the_only_solorose replied: "have you been tested for TB?"
Sassy OLD Broad replied: "Try being tested for T.B. You can go to the healthy department for this. You have alot of the symptoms, although you didn't mention a cough, you can still have T.B. in other parts of your body besides your lungs. Just a suggestion. Godloveya."
wonderwoman replied: "I had similar conditions and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. See a psychiatrist who can treat you and prescribe too. I will pray for you.
Peace and Love your way."
marlee h replied: "My sister is dealing with this too. It certainly sounds like chronic fatigue syndrome. The drs don't like that one but it is really outthere. Keep plugging away till someone hears you."
leadbelly replied: "I used to get night sweats. I think it was caused by too much sweet food and/or dairy products. I love ice-cream and yogurt.
Probably more exercise and fresh air will help, but I also use some dietary supplements (Vitamin B12 and natural Vitamin E)."
rabbit0102030 replied: ""cold sweets, nights sweets, clammy sweets,?" This sounds more like a candy shop or Food Network than a disease or sickness, or maybe your body is rejecting your horrible spelling skills."
Samm replied: "Have you considered that whatever your diet is it is not giving you enough vitamins and minerals.
I have recently started taking nearly every vitamin from A to Z in an effort to improve my own health. In about four weeks my general body health is much better. My brain power is improved, brain fog diminished.
I personally have sever reactions to prescribed medications. So read all of your side effects for any thing you take.
If you are doing without carbohydrates dramatically. That's rice, breads, potatoes, pastas, you can get serious heart racing and palpitations. I had this happen to be when I went on one diet. Our heart muscle needs carbs to keep it functioning well. Our body needs healthy fats also. Olive oil and I use Olivio margarine (made from olive oil). It tastes great.
Are you over weight? Excessive weight puts a massive stress on all organs and body systems.
Most all of your symptons sound EXACTLY like menopause. I have been there and done that. I have to stay on Premarin to be sane and normal as possible.
I hope some of what I have said will give you some words for thought.
If I were in your position I would at the very least be sure to eat modest portions of the starches every day to see if it helps the racing heart. If this should be a cause to the heart racing eating carbs will calm it down almost immediately.
Try a multivitamin morning and night. A good quality high dosage vitamin. Give these two simple solutions and see if you see or feel some changes.
Google your symptoms and do your own research. Maybe your Dr. just doesn't think out side of the box.
I am taking a multi vitamin, acidophlis, B complex, biotin, ester c, D, E, Fish Oil, Gingko
Biloba, Iron, Magnesium, Niocin, Zinc. These are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. These I take daily.
I am attempting to improve how I feel since I have deveoped Rheumatoid Arthritis..
Best wishes for feeling better.
I just Googled your symptoms and Project Aware (menopausal Symptoms) came up.
It sound like you. Take a look."
jnb8589 replied: "You didn't mention your age or gender, but it sounds like menopause to me. I can actually begin at any age and then last forever. There is hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which alleviates the symptoms of menopause. But you really should check with your doctor. Good Luck!"
What are my realistic chances for staying alive for ten or more years now? I am a 37 year old male who is an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic. I am also taking lithium and abilify for bipolar disorder. I had a severe heart attack last November 4th 2005 and a 6-way bypass open heart surgery on November the 9th. After the Heart attack I lost 30 percent of my Heart Muscle's ejection factor.
JohnnyBravo replied: "Better than average. After all that, seems that it just isn't your time yet.
Good luck."
Tina replied: "Hi There
I'm not a doctor nor a higher power so I can't say for sure, but I will comment on your question.
My uncle is 83, he has lived about 30 some years with insulin dependent diabetes, he takes several shots a day and he is quite severe, he's lost his vision due to it. You can live a long time, normal time with diabetes as long as you are vigilant and follow the rules. Bipolar disorders are not fatal, so the next health issue is the heart. Alot of people live a long time after bypass surgery, 6 ways is alot. You still have 70 percent of injection factor though. Now let me ask, what are you doing to be more heart healthy? Are you on a special diet, I'm assuming you probably would be. you have to follow the doctors instructions faithfully so things don't clog up again. Eat healthy, drink alot of water, watch your count and take your insulin on schedule, do the exercises if any are assigned to you (maybe walking is, I know with my mother it was), and live each day to the fullest. A positive outlook on life can actually help you live fuller and longer too. I think you'll be here for another 10+ years, just follow your doctors health plan for you."
I've just started taking Abilify and I'm worried about the side affects, can I die? Advice pls? I'm 20 yrs old and I have schizophrenia I have been on Abilify for two weeks now and so far the sickness has stopped but I have loads of other side affects, I don't sleep and I have to take sleeping tablets, I'm getting really bad anxiety I get weird heart beats, I'm hot all the time, I have neck ache and I'm feeling abit paranoid. I spoke to my case worker and doctor and they both say it's just side affects that will go away but I've been doing some research and I've been hearing things like 'don't take abilify or you will die' and now I'm really worried. Can I die on Abilify? How common is it? Advice pls
Jane replied: "Read the pamphlet that came with the pills."
door.uk replied: "Chill Tommy you doctor would not give you anything that might harm you let alone kill you..take care ."
Emma F replied: "Keep taking the pills. It is true that you could die, but this side effect is extremely rare. Read the directions that came with your pills. Remember that Pharmaceutical companies are required by law to make known all side effects. it basically protects them from lawsuits."
Palindromic Bob replied: "Don't worry if it was going to kill you it wouldn't have passed licensing or been prescribed to you.
Be very careful when doing research about medication on the internet. Sometime reports are from people that don't really know what they are talking about and others are so anti-medication they can be blind to the benefits it may have.
The side effects you are describing are all common with this medication.
At the 2 week stage I'd say your probably on 10-15mg daily?
Usually medication does take a period of time for the body to get used to it. About 6-8 weeks is usually long enough to tell if it is working for the symptoms of paranoia and your body should adjust to it. I know this may seem a long time but it is the time scale needed to assess the effectiveness.
The biggest problem with all anti-psychotic medication is that the lists of side effects are usually quite long.
Abilify is one of the newer ones and tend not to be as sever as older types.
If you are still suffering from the side effects after about 4-5week ask your doctor for further advice. The problem with side effects is that is makes compliance to the medication regime extremely hard and this is not good for you at all.
Keep a diary of the effects and the times they effect you most. This way the doctor can have a better idea of how it's working.
It should be a priority that medication used to assist is effective for the symptoms of the illness it's being used to treat without causing so many side effects that you'd rather not take it.
I'm sorry i can't help you more but I can assure you that the medication will not kill you if you take it as prescribed."
